Cementum Annuli Aging….
November 23rd, 2010Over the past 4 years we have begun to send incisors from adult bucks to a wildlife lab for CA aging.
With this process, a longitudinal cross section of the tooth is cut and they can be aged by counting growth rings much like a tree.
The process is accurate in the upper 90 percentile so we are able to get ages of over mature deer.
What we have learned is the age structure at OakGrove is off the charts and extremely well balanced!
The 2009 buck harvest produced two 8 year olds (YO), two 7 YO, two 6 YO, three 5 YO, two 4 YO, and two 3 YO…..quite impressive for SC!
The 2010 harvest has produced two expected to exceed 10 YO and several over 5 YO to date.
Below is an image of the jawbone from a suspected 10+year old buck harvested off OakGrove.
Fall hunting and weather!
October 19th, 2010The deer movement has been somewhat unpredictable but is to be expected with the horrible weather pattern we are stuck in at the moment. We desperately need cooler weather and RAIN!
It is extremely dry, acorns are falling and the pre-rut is among us…Please bring some weather soon!
